“People are capable, at any time in their lives, of doing what they dream of” – Abhilekha justifies this quote by Paolo Coelho, by being the child prodigy that she was. Abhilekha Das, danced her way into success at the spring of her life. This Assam girl lived her former years in Bengal.
She practiced dance forms like Kathak and Bharatnatyam and fine-tuned her talent by coaching under Deboshree Ray and Gautam Sir in Prachin Kala Kendra. She performed her first act in Shantiniketan Rabindra Nitra, Orissa at the nascent age of 12. She holds those former years close to her because of the profound recognition and love she received from the Bengali community.
Her big breakthrough was when she performed a Bihu dance act in her school annual function. Nipon Goswami, the veteran Assamese actor and chief guest for the event was fascinated with her act and gave her an opportunity to act in Assamese drama. Thereon started her theatre career, she took acting workshops during summer vacations and did everything in her power to be the best.
Adolescence is a delicate time and Abhilekha could not escape the downs it brought. Regardless of her efforts, she was not being as well received in the theatre industry of Assam as she was in Bengal.
One such incident was when a make-up staff member denied working with her. Discouraged, just not enough to stop working hard, she continued to rehearse and learn acting in Ankan School of Drama.
At 14, her incessant exertion and exceptional talent bagged her an opportunity with Manoj Das in her first-ever music video Dhipping Dhipping. She only went onwards and upwards from there, doing more music albums like Dil Hai Beimaan, Gungun to name a few. Life came full circle for her when after completing her school, the same makeup staff who humiliated her invited her to do a print photoshoot.
In came another predicament after she graduated. Her morally corrupt partner who leaked her personal pictures all over the Internet. She struggled to deal with peers who instead of offering support, trolled her.
Having her family and Manoj sir by her side was a blessing in disguise. She recalls this one time with utter glee when Manoj sir took her to the theatre and played her favorite song. Like any true dancer’s feet, her feet responded to the song before she could comprehend. She felt liberated and knew that being pulled down was not in her list of things to do, so she got back up again.
